The transformation of Rodenhuize into a 180MW biomass-burner followed a €125m ($170m) investment by Electrabel, a subsidiary of utility giant GDF Suez, and Belgian partner Ackermans & van Haaren.
The old coal plant in Ghent had already seen modifications made to one of its units in 2005 and 2008 to permit the production of electricity based on both coal and biomass.
