Szwarc notes that similar cassava-to-ethanol projects in the 1980s failed. "It is fundamental that the technology used creates ethanol that is of a quality compatible with the specifications of the National Petroleum Agency, with consistency, so that no problems occur with motors," Szwarc says, referring to one of the reasons for the failure of the 1980s' commercialisation efforts.
Future lies in cassava
Brazil is on a worldwide public-relations push to sell its sugar-cane-based biofuels, but some believe that cassava will be vital to the future of ethanol.
