"Biofuels for us is not just a business - it's about improving people's lives." The company's biodiesel is made mainly from crops grown in Brazil's northeast, the country's poorest area. "We want to be able to give them education and a decent lifestyle," he says. Petrobras has also given Cunha opportunities to see the world and to go to the US, as he always dreamed.
Fuelling a lifelong passion
Fernando José Cunha chased a job with Petrobras because he liked large machines. He studied engineering, taking the competitive tests that led to a 31-year career at the state-controlled energy giant.
