"We have a potential of 20 terwatt hours [TWh] of forest residues in Sweden that is not used today. This can be increased to 70TWh. If all lignin is used for biofuel production, the Swedish paper and pulp industry would need 30TWh to replace it," Rudberg says.
Forest potential to be tapped for 'black liquor'
Sweden's Chemrec is ready to upgrade its production of a new biofuel created from paper and pulp production, known as 'black liquor', which it claims can compete with traditional petroleum-based products when the price of oil is around $65 per barrel.
