The EPA is due to issue final rules for stage 2 of the Renewable Fuel Standard Program by 1 December.

The Caribbean Basin Ethanol Producers (CBEP) operates dehydration facilities in the Caribbean using hydrous ethanol from Brazil as the primary feedstock. Caribbean ethanol can provide up to 7% of the US market.

Among the CBEP's main concerns is traceability. "It is impossible for us to certify that the hydrous alcohol we purchase from Brazil was made from sugar cane on land currently under cultivation," says executive director George Fitch.

Caribbean
