While acknowledging that Europe’s rapidly growing biofuels industry must be held to strict sustainability criteria, Piebalgs brushed off the argument that the sector has contributed to spiking global food prices.
“The increase in food prices is an important issue. However, we have analysed the data and concluded that our biofuels production has little impact on current global food prices,” he said, speaking at the European Bio-ethanol Fuel Conference in Brussels.
