RSPB and Friends of the Earth have jointly denounced a report adopted by the European Commission (EC) that says there is no need for the EU to impose binding sustainability criteria on the biomass used for power and heating.
The EC argues that because 90% of biomass consumed in the EU comes from European forest residues, and forest cover is increasing rather than decreasing, it is not worth imposing on the industry the “substantial” costs of meeting sustainability criteria.
