The facility is a joint effort between Enerkem, based in Montreal, Quebec, the City of Edmonton and the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI), a provincial entity. AERI, which is funding the C$10m project, has six energy research programs including one dedicated to renewables.
The research facility is part of a comprehensive waste-to-biofuels initiative at the location, which includes a commercial waste-to-biofuels facility to be built by Enerkem that will eventually produce 36 million litres of ethanol a year.
