The deal will take effect 1 January 2014. The plant will use mainly waste wood and eucalyptus trees as fuel and provide electricity for 10,000 homes.

“This new biomass facility will help diversify Progress Energy Florida’s generating fuel mix and shield customers from fluctuations in fossil fuel prices,” says public service chairman Art Graham.

US EcoGen , which is based in Maryland, plans to start construction in first quarter of 2012.
