While conventional power plants often release the heat they create as a by-product of electrical generation via cooling towers, combined heat and power (CHP) systems capture the heat and use it for industrial heating purposes, or, in ‘district heating’ schemes common in Scandinavia, for heating homes and businesses.
Micro-CHP systems typically work the other way around. Heat is produced on a small scale, often using biomass, with electricity produced as a byproduct, which can then be sold into the grid.
