Diageo hopes each year to use 30,000 tonnes of draff – the spent grain left after the distilling process – to help run its site at Glenlossie near Elgin, Scotland.

The draff-burning plant would produce process steam to be used in site operations.

The company has submitted a planning application to add the bioenergy plant to the site, which turns out 12 million bottles of Scotch annually.

Diegeo has already spent £65m on a bioenergy plant at its giant Cameronbridge distillery in Fife, Scotland.
