The transcontinental railroad, based in Calgary, describes says the five month pilot project is the first in Canada. Other participants are Natural Resources Canada, a federal government department; General Electric, manufacturer of the 4,400 horsepower locomotives, and 4Refuels, Canada’s largest fuel management company.
The project, which will run through March, uses biodiesel made from both vegetable oils and animal fat.
Winter temperatures on the Calgary-Edmonton line, where the locomotives will run in captive service, can be as cold as -45 centigrade, although they more typically range from -1 to -20C.
