The agency is proposing reductions in greenhouse gas emissions thresholds for biofuels. Corn ethanol would not meet those thresholds. The EPA says Brazil's sugar-cane ethanol meets part of the requirements - but Brazil believes it could provide all 36 billion gallons (136 billion litres) of biofuels per year mandated in the US.

The emissions of each biofuel are compared to the life-cycle emissions of 2005 petroleum baseline fuels.
