The South AmericaN country exported 5.12 billion litres of ethanol in 2008, compared with 3.53 billion litres 2007 and 3.42 billion litres in 2006. The US is the world’s largest ethanol exporter, and it is also Brazil’s biggest customer.

Exports of ethanol in 2009 are expected to sink to 3.4 billion litres, according to Datagro, a Brazilian ethanol consultancy, as a result of the credit crisis and regulation changes.
