BP estimates it will produce 940 million litres of ethanol a year with its second refinery. Brazil produced about 22.4bn litres of ethanol in 2007-08.
BP bucks trend by investing $1bn in Brazilian refineries
BP's $1bn Brazilian ethanol investment is under way, with its first refinery in operation and a second one planned. The venture is the oil industry's largest investment in Brazilian ethanol, and goes against a current trend of retrenchment.
