Piebalgs says that while he does not believe that food prices have been affected by biofuels production, the EU will nevertheless keep a vigilant eye on the matter, and will issue a report on the subject every two years. Under its renewable-energy directive, biofuels must guarantee at least a 35% greenhouse gas saving compared to traditional fuels by 2010.
Biofuel 'not linked to food price'
EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs says the relationship between biofuel production and rising food prices has been blown "out of proportion", and he pins the future of Europe's climate goals on the sector.
