Drax power station is currently the single-largest emitter of CO 2 in the UK. Commissioned in 1974, it produces around 7% of the country's electricity supply. According to press reports, Drax produced nearly 21 million tonnes of CO 2 in 2005 - more than 100 developing countries around the world combined.
Biggest polluter to become greenest producer
Drax, the UK's largest power station and newest coal plant, has granted the final contract for its 400-megawatt (MW) biomass co-firing plant, slated to be in operation by 2010 in North Yorkshire.
