The renewable-energy bill languished in the legislature for nearly a decade, stymied by the opposition of the powerful state-run Taiwan Power Company (Taipower).

The bill seeks to install between 6,500 and 10,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity over the next 20 years – up from its current level of 2,278MW, or 5.8% of its total.

The bill mandates that all new government buildings utilise renewable-energy devices, while offering consumers low-interest loans and other subsidies to have the devices installed in their homes and offices.
