Its women and children used to subsist on agriculture from the drought-ridden land near the Pacific coastline, while its men toiled far away in mining towns extracting copper.

Winds of change started drifting into Canela a few years ago, when the 18-megawatt (MW) Endesa wind farm, Canela 1, was built. It came on line in 2007.

Now, four more farms are under construction in the area, including an extension of Canela 1.
