Wind projects completed last year represented about 42% of all US new power generation capacity nationwide are were equivalent to taking more than 7m cars off the road, says AWEA in its annual report.

The industry brought 4,313MW of new wind power on line in fourth quarter alone, more than any single year except 2007.

Wind power generating capacity stood at 25,369MW at yearend 2008, moving the US past Germany into the top spot in global rankings, AWEA data shows.
