Two dams, Santo Antonio and Jirau, are being built in the state of Rondonia at a cost of about $11bn by two consortia, one led by Odebrecht and th other by GDF Suez. The dams are being built in response to electricity blackouts earlier this decade, and are part of the government's accelerated growth program -PAC.

The seven lots for 2,375km worth of lines were won three months ago by a private company and two consortia that include the participation of state companies.
