Run-of-the-river hydroelectricity is generated by the natural flow and elevation drop of a river. The projects do not require a large impoundment of water, which limits ecological impact up river.

The Ohio River is the largest tributary, by volume, of the Mississippi River. It is approximately 981 miles long and is located in the eastern US.

Congress is encouraging operators of many of the nation’s 82,000 dams to attach hydroelectric plants to them as a way to harvest renewable energy.
