First Solar has requested Chile’s environmental leasing agency allow it to build the $370m Luz del Norte project in the Atacama Desert, which would soak up 1.7 million of the US PV giant’s modules.

The application follows on First Solar’s acquisition earlier this year of Santiago-based Solar Chile, which has a 1.5GW pipeline of development-stage projects across the country.

The news follows on the announcement last week that SunEdison, another US based solar company, has filed plans to build a 92MW plant in northern Chile.
