First Solar buys Chilean developer

US thin-film PV giant First Solar has bought a developer with a 1.5GW project portfolio in Chile.

The acqusition of Solar Chile gives its new American owner a range of early-to-mid-stage projects in northern Chile, including the Atacama Desert region, which First Solar says boasts the highest irradiance in the world.

First Solar bought the developer from Fundación Chile, a public-private incubator for technology-led companies run by the Chilean government and mining group BHP Billiton.
