Spanish turbine maker Gamesa would doubtless agree, having seen its prototype 5MW offshore wind turbine, erected on a quayside in Arinaga this summer, generating power in gusts of some 30 metres per second (80km/h) in its first weeks of trials.
Despite the Canary Islands’ position close to the equator, the flagship Gamesa G128-5.0 is designed to take up a place among the mid-range offshore category alongside the likes of Siemens’ forthcoming 4MW offering and Areva’s 5MW model — a segment that is expected to dominate future near-shore, shallow-water developments.
