GE Renewable Energy has been awarded €3m ($3m) by the European Commission to co-fund a technology to substitute climate-killing fluorinated gas used to as insulation in high-voltage power grid substations – both onshore and offshore.
The Commission’s LIFE climate action programme has granted the funds to the company’s grid solutions business as part of EU efforts to avoid emissions of fluorinated gases (‘F-gases’) that are powerful greenhouse gases, with a global warming effect up to 25,000 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2).
