Rapidly growing energy demand in many developing regions of the world could be met with offshore wind power alone, according to a World Bank report into emerging markets in Brazil, India, Morocco, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Vietnam.

The study, which was spun out of a $5m market development programme launched earlier this year, calculated a total of 3.1TWs of potential offshore wind power in the waters off the eight countries — with two thirds of that coming from deep-water floating turbines.
