The driver of a wind turbine transportation vehicle died after it crashed in South Africa.

The accident happened earlier on Thursday while the truck negotiated the mountainous Piekenierskloof Pass near Citrusdal in the Western Cape.

The vehicle was under traffic escort when the driver lost control, reported the local News24 citing local police.

There were no immediate details of the vehicle's destination, but photographs show Siemens Gamesa branding on what appears to be a tower component.

Recharge understands the driver was an employee of a third-party contractor.

The Spanish-German OEM said it will comment when further details are available.

On a global level, the increasing size of turbines and the push to develop sites with good wind resources in less accessible locations has led the industry to seek innovative logistics solutions to ease pressure on transportation.
