Vestas won five orders in the US totalling 1.3GW, pushing the Danish wind turbine OEM's order intake in the US alone past 4.4GW this year, and beyond 10GW globally - a figure it has never previously reached this early in the year.

The manufacturer also received smaller orders from Italy, Greece and Germany.

Given the strong order intake in the third quarter, Sydbank chief financial analyst Jacob Pedersen raised its estimate for the manufacturer's order intake for the full year to 17GW from 16GW previously expected.

The Danish bank maintains a "buy" recommendation for Vestas shares, which rose 2.26% to DKr543.80 (US79.33) in morning trading in Copenhagen Tuesday.

Including expected unannounced orders, Sydbank reckons the OEM's overall order intake in the year through September even reached some 12.2GW.

Recent cutbacks in Denmark at both Vestas and Siemens Gamesa have, among other things, been due to price pressure, Pederson said, but added: "we believe that this is more due to the price decline that has previously occurred - rather than a renewed severe pressure on prices."

Five large US orders

The first order is for 359MW of its V120-2.2MW turbines for a wind project under development by an undisclosed customer.

Including previously purchased V112-3.45 MW components, the project has a total nameplate capacity of 400MW.

The order includes a 10-year service agreement.

Turbine delivery is planned for the first quarter of 2020 with commissioning scheduled for the third quarter of 2020.

The manufacturer also secured a second order for 230MW of its V136-3.45MW turbines in a 3.6MW power-optimised mode.

Including previously purchased 2MW components, that US order has a total nameplate of 241MW.

The order includes supply and commissioning of the turbines as well as a 20-year service agreement. Turbine delivery here will begin in the second quarter of 2020 with commissioning scheduled for the third quarter of next year.

A third order, over 337MW of V150-4.2MW turbines and V136-3.45 machines delivered in a 3.7MW power optimised mode came in for a wind project in the US that was originally developed by Roaring Fork Wind, a joint venture between RES (Renewable Energy Systems) and Steelhead Americas, Vestas’ development arm in North America.

The order includes supply and commissioning of the turbines as well as a 20-year service agreement. Turbine delivery for this order is planned for the first quarter of 2020 with commissioning scheduled for the third quarter of 2020.

Order Nr. 4 in the US was for 134MW of V110-2.0 turbines for a wind project by an undisclosed customer. Including previously purchased 2MW components, this project has a total nameplate capacity of 150MW.

The order includes supply and commissioning of the turbines as well as a multi-year service agreement. Turbine delivery will begin in the second quarter of 2020 with commissioning scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2020.

The last US order announced before the end of the third quarter was for another 256MW of V120-2.2MW turbines, also for an unnamed client.

The order includes supply and commissioning of the turbines as well as a 10-year service agreement. Turbine delivery will begin in the second quarter of 2020 with commissioning scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2020.

Finnish, Italian and Greek orders

Vestas also won a 211MW order for 13 of its V150-4.2MW turbines and 28 of its V150-5.6MW machines from Glennmont Partners together with the Finnish developer Ilmatar Energy - the largest order to date for turbines from the EnVentus platform.

The turbines for the Piiparinmäki wind project in the municipalities of Pyhäntä and Kajaani will be equipped with an anti-icing system, and the majority of the offtake from the project is backed by a corporate purchase agreement (PPA) with Google, enabling the project to be built on a purely merchant basis.

Once fully operational in 2022, the wind farm will be Finland's largest.

Vestas said it also has secured a 43MW order for two merchant repowering projects in the Italian province of Chieti from developer E2i.

The repowering will reduce the number of turbines by 70%.

For the Roccaspinalveti wind park, 24 V47-660 kW wind turbines will be replaced by nine V112-3.3 MW turbines , while the Castiglione Messer Marino will include four V112-3.3 MW wind turbines to replace third-party turbines.

Turbine delivery is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2020 while commissioning is planned for the fourth quarter of 2020.

In Greece, utility Iberdrola ordered four of the OEM's V150-4.2MW turbines in a 4MW operating mode for the 16MW Pyrgari wind project in the town of Viotia.

The order comes with a 10-year service agreement.

Turbine delivery is planned for the first quarter of 2020, whilst commissioning is planned for the second quarter of the same year.

And the manufacturer also secured a 31MW order in the shrinking German market, from Windpark Albertshof, a unit of public utility Berliner Stadtwerke, for a wind farm in the state of Brandenburg.

The eight V117-3.45MW machines will be delivered starting in the fourth quarter of 2020, with commissioning expected still in the same quarter.

"Vestas won our tender from December 2018. We had decided to tender the wind park Albertshof as a turnkey project, because as a growing public municipality it is important for us to have as much as possible done ideally by only supplier,” said Kerstin Busch, managing director of the Berliner Stadtwerke.
