The 240-sq-mile (621.6sq km) Oahu North area and 517-sq-mile Oahu South area both encompass some of the best wind speeds around the island – a range of 8.5-9.0 meters/second, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a federal scientific agency.
Both Oahu North and South are no closer than 8 miles from shore. They include area that private developers Alpha Hawaii Wind (AHW) , a subsidiary of Denmark’s Alpha Wind Energy, and Progression Energy, based in Portland, Oregon, are seeking to lease for projects that would employ floating foundations moored to the sea bottom.
