The move came after pressure from US Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, who wanted the Defense and Homeland Security Departments to replace the long-range surveillance radar.
They jointly manage the radar in Fossil in north-central Oregon, which also assists with civilian air traffic control in the region.
The Federal Aviation Administration has cited certain existing turbines and the positioning of those in several projects has obstructing the radar’s ability to fully monitor airspace.
