In 4 November mid-term elections, Republicans increased their majority to at least 60 in the 435-seat House, with seven districts undecided.

The party also gained a 53-46 seat majority in the Senate, with victory in a run-off election next month likely.

With Democrats in charge of the outgoing Senate, there was little, if any, coordination between the chambers. Often, one was in session while members of the other were not in the nation’s capital.
