Fifteen new offshore wind fabrication facilities will need to be built in the UK for the British government to meet its pledge to grow domestic manufacturing in the rapidly emerging sector to the targeted 60% level, a new report from the Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council (SOWEC) has calculated.

Based on modelling by consultancy BVG Associates, the study recommends a strategy that focuses on floating projects rather than fixed as “likelier to deliver higher levels of UK and Scottish content”, with manufacturing of towers, blades, and platforms as the “most promising” inward investment opportunities.
