The UK’s three grid operators – National Grid, ScottishPower and Scottish & Southern Energy – are currently limited in the amount they can invest in new connections as a means of capping the cost of electricity for consumers.
Ofgem is currently reviewing the 20-year-old regulatory regime that ties operators’ expenditures to the retail price index, which tracks inflation. Both grid operators and the renewables industry argue that the current system is stymieing the growth of green-energy projects.
