Oil supermajor Total expects turbines as powerful as 20MW to drive down costs in the floating wind sector, where it is angling to take a global leadership role and is poised to announce another “significant” deal this month.
Philippe Sauquet, head of Total’s gas, renewables and power unit, said the larger turbines would help floating achieve the same sort of cost-reductions seen in fixed-bottom offshore wind development, where Total earlier this year made its first foray by taking control of the 1.1GW
