Five months ago, as Texas residents sweltered through their hottest August for years, wind farm owners were sweating for different reasons.

With turbines often idle as afternoon winds faltered, some project owners holding so-called P99 hedge contracts (see panel) were forced to buy hugely expensive spot power to meet supply obligations with commodity trading counterparties such as banks – and registered punishing financial losses in the process.
