Dutch-German grid operator TenneT has awarded an offshore wind grid connection contract worth about €140m ($157m) to Italy’s cabling company Prysmian Group.
The grid link to the DolWin5 offshore wind cluster in the German part of the North Sea will enable the connection of multiple offshore wind farms to the German grid, the company said.
“The Dolwin5 project continues our valued long relationship with the major TSO TenneT and demonstrates our ability to provide tailor-made submarine cable solutions for challenging projects, providing the offshore infrastructure needed to support the growth of clean energy in Northern Europe,” said Hakan Ozmen, executive vice president for projects at Prysmian Group.
The 900MW DolWin5 grid link north of the island of Borkum
is to connect the wind farms Borkum Riffgrund West I and II and Northern Energy OWP West to the high voltage grid onshore.
DolWin5 is the first offshore grid connection system in which TenneT connects the wind turbines directly via 66 kV three phase electric power cables to the offshore platform, TenneT said.
This innovative technology will firstly eliminate the need for the substations required so far in every wind farm. Secondly, no more 155 kV three-phase electric power cables are necessary for connecting the offshore platform of TenneT to that of the wind farm.
