Utility SSE committed to building a £580m ($730m) project on Shetland off northern Scotland that it said will be the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm.

SSE said the 443MW Viking project will achieve load factors of around 48% in the offshore-like wind conditions on the North Sea island, with output of 1.9TWh annually. The developer has not yet said what turbines will be used, but has previously applied to deploy more powerful machines than scoped in Viking’s original consent, allowing it to tap the latest technology.
