Transmission developer TransWest Express selected Siemens Energy to supply the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology for its $3bn, 732-mile (1,178km) project that will transport wind energy from Wyoming to California and adjoining US states.

TransWest is the country’s largest merchant renewable energy transmission project among 10 or so in development with a length exceeding 175 miles (282km).

It will carry electricity generated by the future 3GW Chokecherry and Sierra Madre wind farm in southern Wyoming on lands owned by the federal government and billionaire oil and entertainment mogul Philip Anschutz, whose holding company owns the wind farm and TransWest.
