Siemens Gamesa plans to phase out the usage of sulphur hexafluoride, or SF6 – a "climate-killing" fluorinated gas (F-gas) used as insulation material in switchgear – from its products by 2030.

The wind turbine manufacturer said the colourless, odourless, synthetic gas is used as an effective insulating material for medium and high-voltage electrical installations to prevent short-circuits and accidents, and is a standard component in any electrical management device.
