In Mexico’s landmark first clean-energy auction, held in March, solar developers led by Enel Green Power and SunPower took home nearly three-quarters of the capacity up for grabs, substantially undercutting most wind bids and stunning the global renewables sector.

“I haven’t met anybody who saw that coming,” Andersen tells Recharge. “Even the solar guys seem to be surprised.”

The result of Mexico’s first auction was “shocking and awful” for the wind sector, Brian Gaylord, senior analyst at Make Consulting, said last week in New Orleans.
