Shell and EDPR selected Danish contractors Bladt and Semco to supply a 1.2GW offshore substation for their Mayflower wind project off the US state of Massachusetts.
A joint venture between the Danish groups will build the substation – a 4,700-tonne topside and 3,000-tonne jacket foundation – for the 804MW wind farm that’s due to enter service in 2025.
The partners will bring to the US experience on massive European projects including Hornsea 1, the world's biggest offshore wind farm off eastern England.
The two said in a statement: “Semco and Bladt’s strong track record of providing competitive turnkey offshore wind electrical infrastructure is a door opener in the market.
“The Mayflower Wind project provides a unique opportunity to firmly establish our companies as highly experienced pioneers in the nascent and promising US offshore wind industry. We will build strong relationships with Mayflower Wind’s parent companies – Shell and EDP Renewables – as well as other involved parties.”
The partners expect to have the substation ready for delivery from Bladt’s site in Denmark in 2024.
Oil giant Shell and Portuguese developer EDPR won the right to build the project in a tender held by Massachusetts last October in what was a breakthrough in the US market for Shell New Energies.
Mayflower will build its array in a zone about 32km from the state’s southern coast.
