Diversifying offshore oil & gas contractor Subsea 7's heavy-lift outfit Seaway 7 has been chosen by Vattenfall to partner on the 760MW Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) 1&2 offshore wind farm off the Netherlands.

Seaway 7’s scope of work at the development – in line to be the world’s first zero-subsidy offshore wind farm – will encompass transport and installation of 76 monopile foundations as well as laying of inter-array cables.

Steph McNeill, Subsea 7 Renewables & Heavy Lifting SVP, said: “We look forward to working collaboratively with Vattenfall as a trusted partner to support the installation of the HKZ wind farms and help to deliver the first zero-subsidy offshore wind projects in the Netherlands.”

He added that Seaway 7 was also in harness for the Swedish utility’s ongoing tender for the 760MW HKZ 3&4 project.

Integrated offshore installation activities for both HKZ projects would be carried out in 2022 using Seaway 7 vessels.

Earlier this week, Vattenfall announced it planned to use 76 of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s 10MW turbines at HKZ 1&2, which is slated to be brought online in 2023, with longer-term plans to install another 76 at HKZ 3&4 if it wins the tender for that wind zone, expected to be announced next month.

HKZ 1&2 will generate enough power every year to supply up to 1.5 million average European households with electricity.
