Seajacks will install turbines at one of Japan’s first large-scale offshore wind farms after securing a deal for the Akita and Noshiro project.

UK-based Seajacks will install the 33 V117-4.2MW MHI Vestas turbines to be used at the project after a deal with the project company building the wind farm in Akita prefecture.

Japanese power giant Marubeni is an investor in the wind farm and the co-owner of Seajacks, which operates five vessels and has already secured work in the Taiwanese sector.

Akita and Noshiro is set to be among the first offshore wind projects deployed in Japan, with installation set to start in 2022.

The project will operate in relatively shallow waters between five and 30 metres. It is one of an early batch of projects that will pave the way for larger developments in Japan following tenders that are due to begin this year.

The island nation wants to have 10GW of offshore capacity in operation by 2030, up from only 65MW now.

The impending explosion in capacity has seen global offshore wind supply chain players race to form partnerships to serve the Japanese market – DEME and Van Oord, for example, have both struck such deals in recent months.
