The 32MWh system features lithium-ion batteries housed inside a 6,300 square-foot (585sq meter) facility at SCE’s Monolith substation in Tehachapi, California. LG Chem supplied the batteries.

The $50m project is strategically located in the Tehachapi Wind Resource Area that will have up to 4.5GW of wind energy capacity by 2016. SCE and the US Energy Department provided the funding.

“This installation will allow us to take a serious look at the technological capabilities of energy storage on the electric grid,” says Imre Gyuk, energy storage program manager in DOE’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability.
