German food retail chain REWE has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement with Orsted to buy electricity from 100MW of offshore wind energy from the utility’s Borkum Riffgrund 3 array that is set to become operational in the North Sea in 2025.

The sea-based wind power will equal the electricity consumption of 1,500 REWE supermarkets. The agreement is REWE’s largest renewable energy offtake deal to date and the first by a German food retailer to purchase offshore wind power from the North Sea.
