With winds blowing at more than seven metres per ­second not uncommon here, the 240-megawatt­ (MW) development, the largest in Continental ­Europe, coursed 530 gigawatt hours into the ­national grid last year.

Run by operating company VentoMinho, Alto Minho 1 is populated with 120 Enercon 2MW turbines.

The towers are clustered at ­altitudes ranging from 700–1,000 metres on the ­Picoto-San Silvestre, Santo António, Mendoiro-Bustavade­, Alto do ­Corisco and ­Picos ‘sub-wind farms’.
