US developer Pattern Energy claimed a new milestone for offshore wind in Japan as it closed financing and started full-scale construction work on a project allied with large-scale storage and using the most powerful turbines so far off the nation’s coasts.

Pattern and its majority-owned Japanese unit Green Power Investment Corporation (GPI) said the 112MW Ishikari project off Hokkaido will break new ground by building a 100MW/180MWh battery facility onshore featuring Samsung lithium ion batteries to store its power.

Ishikari will also mark the first installation of an 8MW turbine in Japan, said Pattern Energy, which has contracted Siemens Gamesa to supply 14 of its SG 8.0-167
