US developer Pattern Energy claimed a new milestone for offshore wind in Japan as it closed financing and started full-scale construction work on a project allied with large-scale storage and using the most powerful turbines so far off the nation’s coasts.

Pattern and its majority-owned Japanese unit Green Power Investment Corporation (GPI) said the 112MW Ishikari project off Hokkaido will break new ground by building a 100MW/180MWh battery facility onshore featuring Samsung lithium ion batteries to store its power.
