Orsted has turned to Singapore-based Keppel Offshore & Marine (O&M) to build two 600MW offshore substations for its Greater Changhua wind farms.

Keppel said the contract – worth more that 150m Singapore dollars ($110m) – is due to be completed in the third quarter of 2021.

Orsted’s Changhua 1 and 2A, between them 900MW, are the first of a potential 2.4GW the Danish group could develop off Taiwan’s Changhua County.

The first two projects were the subject of a final investment decision by Orsted at the end of April, following what it said was an intensive round of discussions with its Taiwan supply chain following a row over support with the country’s government.

Permitting problems left Orsted and other developers with a worse than expected feed-in tariff for their initial projects, prompting the developer to put its plans on hold for several months.

Keppel O&M said: "Offshore wind energy continues to gain traction around the world, and a large number of wind farms are under planning and construction.

“We have been able to leverage and extend our capabilities in offshore engineering and construction to provide services and solutions for this fast-growing adjacent sector, supporting the evolving needs of the energy industry."
