Denmark’s Orsted has officially opened the giant 659MW Walney Extension in the Irish Sea.
The Walney Extension with its 87 wind turbines is currently the world's largest operational offshore wind farm, covering an area of 145 square kilometres.
The project used technology from two turbine manufacturers, and features 40 MHI Vestas 8MW V164s and a further 47 Siemens Gamesa 7MW SWT-7.0-154s.
More than 200km of cables were used to connect the turbines offshore to the National Grid onshore.
The inauguration took place in Barrow, in the north-west of England, which will now become home to the project's operations and maintenance team.
